- +ZK!Common Ground for Macintosh 1.1.2
- Release Notes
- Futura Book
- $mCommon Ground 1.1.2 is a maintenance release to the shipping version of Common Ground 1.1. The 1.1.2 release
- lincludes updates to the full-featured Common Ground 1.1 viewer, the Common Ground miniviewer, and the Common
- YGround Maker extension. No other portions of the Common Ground package have been changed.
- 8Release 1.1.2 includes fixes for the following problems:
- New York
- QuarkXPress
- sUsers will no longer get the "Error occurred attempting to create spool file ID=-1" message when creating multipage
- <Common Ground documents with an embedded Windows miniviewer.
- PageMaker 5.0
- rUsers will no longer get the "Error occurred attempting to create spool file ID=-118" message when creating Common
- (Ground documents using JPEG compression.
- FrameMaker
- qCommon Ground's ability to handle kerned and negatively tracked text has been greatly improved. For best results,
- mdocuments with spacing problems should be recreated with the updated Maker and viewed with one of the updated
- viewers.
- ,Improved printing from Common Ground Viewers
- pThis release of Common Ground fixes a number of PostScript printing problems that users experienced with version
- p1.1. Most users will also see improved print speed when printing from the Miniviewer (embedded or stand-alone).
- nCommon Ground viewers now support color PostScript printing when using LaserWriter driver 8.x and a PostScript
- sLevel 2 color printer. However, color PostScript printing using LaserWriter driver 7.x or PostScript Level 1 color
- printers is not supported.
- nDue to the way in which we must store and download font information, printing from a Common Ground viewer will
- Goften take longer than printing from the document's parent application.
- *Known problems, conflicts and limitations:
- &EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) graphics
- The Common Ground Maker is a
- QuickDraw
- );< printer device. Like other QuickDraw devices (StyleWriters,
- $nImageWriters, DeskJets, and low-end LaserWriters) the Common Ground Maker is not able to understand or process
- mPostScript code contained in EPS graphics. Common Ground is limited to using the PICT or TIFF preview graphic
- uembedded in most EPS files. When present, these previews typically contain only 72 dpi information. As a result, the
- kCommon Ground document may look fine at normal zoom on screen, but will be muddy or jaggy when printed to a
- n300 dpi printer. Some EPS graphics do not have an embedded preview image. These will show up as gray boxes on
- 9screen, both in Common Ground and the parent application.
- mFor best results, EPS graphics should be replaced with PICT or TIFF equivalents before printing to the Common
- lGround Maker. Also, some applications have the option of embedding a 300 dpi preview bitmap in the EPS files
- ethat they save. EPS files with these enhanced preview bitmaps will also work well with Common Ground.
- #PostScript lines, fills and shading
- kThe PostScript page description language contains elements for which there are no equivalents in QuickDraw.
- rPostScript devices are able to draw much thinner lines than QuickDraw devices. PostScript devices are also able to
- sgenerate graduated fills and shades that are unavailable to QuickDraw devices. It is important to keep this in mind
- Bwhen creating documents to be distributed in Common Ground format.
- New York
- +$D&Common Ground Shortcut (Control Panel)
- Futura Book
- mThe Common Ground Shortcut may interfere with hotkey sequences in other applications or key combinations used
- qto generate special characters (such as the em-dash and smart quotes). The workaround for this problem is to open
- kthe Common Ground Shortcut Control Panel and choose another modifier key (the Control key is usually a good
- (choice, since not many programs use it.)
- +Common Ground Viewer and security settings.
- rThe full-featured Common Ground viewer does not properly respect all security settings. Specifically, if security
- osettings are applied to a Common Ground document to disable copying of text or images, the full-featured viewer
- uwill also disable printing. This problem only applies to the Macintosh Full-featured viewer. The Macintosh miniviewer
- <and both Windows viewers will properly respect the settings.
- DQuarkXPress 3.3 - Graphics may not appear in Common Ground document.
- cWhen printing to Common Ground from QuarkXPress 3.3, graphic images of all types may be replaced by
- mplaceholder boxes in the Common Ground document. This is not a bug in Common Ground, but rather the result of
- nQuark defaulting its output level to "Rough" when printing to Common Ground. The workaround to this problem is
- qdetailed in Technical Support Document #1, available from No Hands Software. In short, the users must first print
- rfrom Quark to their standard output device, making sure that the Output options is set to Normal. They should then
- qswitch directly to the Common Ground Maker (using the Chooser or the Shortcut) and send the print job again. This
- owill force Quark to apply the Output level from the previously selected device to the Common Ground Maker. All
- mgraphic images will then appear in the Common Ground document. Quark has acknowledged that this is a problem
- Uin their product and said that it should be fixed in the next release of QuarkXPress.
- -QuarkXPress - 'Resource not found -192' Error
- nThis error message will be reported when attempting to print a range of pages from QuarkXPress while using the
- oCommon Ground shortcut to select the Common Ground Maker. The way to avoid this problem is to either print the
- oentire document when using the shortcut or manually select the Common Ground Maker in the Chooser and print the
- desired range of pages.
- PhoenixPage PostScript clone.
- qThe Common Ground viewers are not compatible with Phoenix's PostScript clone. Devices using this interpreter will
- knot be able to print Common Ground documents. The Xante accelerator board and GCC Technologies' SelectPress
- p600 are known to have this problem with Common Ground. If you use such a device, you should check for the latest
- ROM upgrade.
- Common Ground sample documents
- qBe sure to look at the sample Common Ground documents in the Sample Documents folder located in the Common Ground
- F1.1 folder. They are good examples of how Common Ground can be used.
- "Launching the Common Ground Viewer
- sOccasionally, when double-clicking a Common Ground document in the Finder, the Common Ground Stand-alone MiniViewer
- smay be launched instead of the Common Ground Viewer. If you wish to prevent this from happening, remove the Common
- ]Ground Stand-alone MiniViewer from your hard disk or compress it using a compression utility.
- 8Opening Common Ground documents that contain JPEG images
- lIf you are distributing Common Ground documents that contain JPEG images to users who may not have QuickTime
- minstalled, you should increase the memory partition of the MiniViewer that you are distributing. To do this:
- )1. Select the MiniViewer in the Finder.
- *2. Select 'Get Info' from the File menu.
- 03. Increase the recommended memory allocation.

- Cross platform issues
- Futura Book
- gCommon Ground has been designed to make it easy for users to share documents between different computer
- platforms.
- &Moving files from Windows to Macintosh
- lDocuments created using the Windows Common Ground Maker must have their 'type' and 'creator' information set
- wbefore they can be opened by double-clicking on the Macintosh. This is a general problem with all cross-platform file
- pformats because DOS files do not contain Mac-specific resource information. This information tells the Macintosh
- HFinder which application to launch in order to open a specific document.
- 9There are three ways to set type and creator information:
- i1. Common Ground for Macintosh 1.1 will let a user open a Windows generated Common Ground document even
- kif the type and creator information has not been set. Once the document has been opened, the Common Ground
- mviewer will correctly set the type and creator information so that the file can be opened by double-clicking.
- u2. Many Macintosh file translation utilities such as PC Exchange allow the user to set a mapping option so that the
- Y.dp file extension is mapped to the correct type (CGDC) and creator (CGVM) automatically.
- s3. No Hands Software provides a free Macintosh utility called DP Changer that correctly sets the type and creator
- lwhen a user drags and drops a Windows-generated Common Ground document onto it. It is located in the Common
- 8Ground Utilities folder in the Common Ground 1.1 folder.
- &Moving files from Macintosh to Windows
- dDocuments created using the Macintosh Common Ground Maker can be viewed in Common Ground for Windows
- pby double-clicking on them in the File Manager, so long as they have the .dp or .exe extension and the Viewer or
- sMiniViewer is installed. If double-clicking the file in the File Manager does not open the file, confirm that the
- oassociation between the .dp extension and Common Ground is set up correctly by choosing Associate from the File
- menu of File Manager.
- 1Installing Common Ground with the Startup Manager
- vIf you use the Common Ground Installer to install an extension that is already installed but has been turned off using
- sthe Startup Manager, the extension will not load until you turn it back on using the Startup Manager. This problem
- Iapplies to the Common Ground Shortcut, QuickTime and Macintosh Easy Open.
